Welcoming Speech
A very warm welcome to the Institute of Visual Informatics (IVI) at Universiti
Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).
It is truly a great honour and privilege for us to host the distinguished delegation from Yunnan Minzu University here today. Your presence brings us immense pleasure, and we are deeply appreciative of the time you have taken to visit us during your time in Malaysia.
We recognize Yunnan Minzu University as a prestigious and historic institution, established in 1951, renowned for its rich cultural diversity, academic excellence, and its significant role as a gateway for international academic engagement in China, particularly across South Asia and Southeast Asia. Your strength in multilingual education and cross-cultural scholarship is both admirable and inspiring.
Established in 2010, IVI is a
multidisciplinary research centre of excellence in the field of Computer
Science and ICT, with a specialization in Visual Informatics. Our core research
areas include Virtual Reality, Visualisation and Simulation, Computer Vision,
Intelligent Data Analytics, Image Processing, and Human-Computer Interaction.
What makes IVI unique is our emphasis on integrating these advanced
technologies with various domains such as medicine, engineering, education,
heritage, and socio-economics, with the aim of improving quality of life and
advancing knowledge for society.
At IVI, we strongly believe that
meaningful innovation happens through collaboration. Therefore, visits such as
this are not merely ceremonial, but serve as important platforms to initiate
dialogue, share expertise, and explore potential academic and research
partnerships between our institutions.
We sincerely hope that today’s
engagement will be the beginning of a long-term relationship between IVI UKM
and Yunnan Minzu University — one that will foster joint research initiatives,
academic exchange, and impactful collaborations soon.
Later in the programme, Dr.
Marizuana Mat Daud, our Head of Industry Engagement and Income Generation, will
present an introduction and promotional video to give you a clearer insight
into the work and facilities of IVI.
Once again, on behalf of
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and the Institute of Visual Informatics, I
warmly welcome all of you to IVI. We look forward to a fruitful, engaging, and
inspiring session together.

WELCOME SPEECH FOR NEW STUDENTS OF IVI (March 2026)
Greetings everyone,
It is my great pleasure to welcome all of you to the beginning of your
postgraduate journey. Today marks an important milestone in your academic and
professional lives. By choosing to pursue postgraduate studies, you have taken
a bold and meaningful step toward deepening your knowledge, expanding your
skills, and contributing to the advancement of your field.
Postgraduate education is different from what many of you may have
experienced before. It is not only about attending lectures or completing
assignments—it is about inquiry, discovery, and intellectual curiosity. You
will be challenged to think critically, to question existing ideas, and to
develop new perspectives. At times, the journey may feel demanding, but it is
precisely through these challenges that growth and innovation emerge.
As postgraduate students, you are now part of a vibrant scholarly community.
Here in the Institute of Visual Informatics (IVI), you will have the
opportunity to learn from distinguished faculty members, collaborate with peers
from diverse backgrounds, and engage in research that can make a meaningful
impact on society. I encourage you to take full advantage of these
opportunities—participate actively in discussions, seek guidance from your
supervisors, and support one another along the way.
Remember that success in postgraduate studies is not achieved alone. It is
built through collaboration, perseverance, and a passion for learning. There
will be moments of uncertainty, but these moments often lead to the most
significant breakthroughs.
I also encourage you to maintain balance in your journey. While academic
excellence is important, your well-being and personal growth are equally vital.
Build networks, form friendships, and create memories that will stay with you
long after you complete your degree.
Once again, welcome to this exciting new chapter. We are proud to have you
here and look forward to witnessing the ideas, discoveries, and contributions
that will emerge from your time with us.
I wish you every success in your postgraduate journey.
Thank you, and welcome to IVI, UKM.

IVI UKM and La Louie Holdings
PRESS RELEASE 2
UKM and La Louie Holdings Sign Letter of Intent for Better Health Better Lives 2.0, Paving the Way for MOA Implementation
Bangi, Selangor, Malaysia — 2 January 2026, 11.00 a.m.
A Letter of Intent (LOI) was officially signed today at 11.00 a.m. between Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and La Louie Holdings Sdn. Bhd., marking the formal commencement of a collaborative framework under the Better Health Better Lives 2.0 initiative.
The LOI was executed through the Institute of Visual Informatics (IVI), UKM, and was signed by Prof. Ir. Dr. Riza Sulaiman, Director of the Institute of Visual Informatics, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.
The signing was witnessed by Associate Prof. Dr. Mohammad Nazir Ahmad, Deputy Director and Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Visual Informatics, and Dr. Mohamed Afiq Hidayat bin Zailani, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Pathology, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.
The Letter of Intent sets out the Parties’ shared intention to collaborate on research-driven, technology-enabled, and immersive initiatives supporting indigenous (Orang Asli) communities, with a strong emphasis on molecular genetics and precision health research, including blood screening, genetic risk profiling, population genomics, and translational applications.
“This collaboration reflects UKM’s commitment to advancing research that delivers real societal impact. By integrating scientific research with immersive and digital technologies, we aim to strengthen how research outcomes are translated into meaningful benefits for underserved communities,” said Prof. Ir. Dr. Riza Sulaiman, Director of the Institute of Visual Informatics, UKM.
The collaboration also explores the use of Smart Reality Artificial Intelligence (SRAI / ImmersaX 720°) to support immersive research visualisation, digital storytelling, and community engagement, enabling research outcomes to be communicated more effectively to stakeholders, students, policymakers, and the public.
The LOI outlines cooperation in areas including joint research and development, establishment of immersive research laboratories and digital platforms, ethical and secure sharing of scientific data and publications, collaborative laboratory and field-based research, and the development of training and capacity-building programmes related to molecular genetics, bioinformatics, and Orang Asli community-based health research.
“Our research has shown that genetic health risks within indigenous populations require targeted, evidence-based approaches. This collaboration allows us to expand scientific understanding while ensuring research findings are translated into improved screening, awareness, and long-term health outcomes,” said Dr. Mohamed Afiq Hidayat bin Zailani, Senior Lecturer, Department of Pathology, Faculty of Medicine, UKM.
Following the signing of the LOI, the Parties will proceed towards the formalisation of specific projects and deliverables through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA), which will define implementation scope, roles and responsibilities, funding arrangements, timelines, and outcome review mechanisms under Better Health Better Lives 2.0.
Louie Liu, project sponsor of Better Health Better Lives 2.0, said the signing reflects a shared commitment to translating community engagement into sustainable, research-led impact through close collaboration with academic and scientific institutions.
The signing ceremony represents an important milestone in the continued evolution of Better Health Better Lives 2.0, reinforcing collaboration between academia and industry to advance health equity, scientific research, and long-term outcomes for Malaysia’s indigenous communities.
